Michigan PFAS Contamination: Remediation, Costs, and Who Pays
Michigan has more known PFAS contamination sites than almost any state in the country — a result of decades of firefighting foam use at military bases, airports, and industrial facilities. The state has set some of the most stringent PFAS drinking water standards in the US (4 and 8 ppt for PFOA/PFOS). The federal EPA's 2024 national MCLs largely aligned with Michigan's standards. The open question is who pays for remediation: polluters under cost-recovery suits, federal funds under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, state appropriations, or local utilities that must upgrade treatment. Municipal water systems, townships with private wells, and county health departments are all navigating this.
