Three road projects affect Cascade Township in summer 2026 — here are the dates and detours

Summer 2026 construction: (1) Cascade Road SE resurfacing, 28th St to Thornapple River Dr — July–August, one-lane alternating. (2) Patterson Ave SE signal work at M-6 ramps — June–July, ramp closures. (3) Thornapple River Dr bridge deck maintenance — August–September, weight restrictions, no closures. Plan for 10–15 minute peak-hour delays on M-6 at Patterson Ave in June and July. Alternate routes: Kraft Ave or Thornapple River Dr during peak hours for Cascade Road work.

What’s Under Construction

Cascade Township maintains 73.92 miles of local roads — a mix rated Poor, Fair, and Good on the PASER scale (1–10). Each year the township partners with the Kent County Road Commission (KCRC) on a 50/50 cost-share program to treat the highest-priority roads before they deteriorate further.

The 2025 PASER map (updated December 4, 2025) shows most township roads in the Fair–Good range, reflecting years of consistent investment. The 2026 program approved at the March 11, 2026 Board meeting continues that track.

2026 Road Overlay Projects

The Board approved two categories of work on March 11, 2026. All projects are a 50/50 cost share between the township and KCRC.

Road Overlays — $375,000 (Township + KCRC)

Road Treatment Length
Hall Street Full-Depth Mill & Fill 0.84 mi
Marsman Full-Depth Mill & Fill 0.23 mi
Oliver Woods Plat Full-Depth Mill & Fill 0.33 mi
Jacksmith / Thornbrook Full-Depth Mill & Fill 0.24 mi
Bolt Drive Chip Seal 0.48 mi
Total road overlays 2.12 mi

PFAS Water Main Restoration — $940,000 (Grant-Funded)

An additional 4.71 miles of full-depth mill & fill in the Burger/Goodwood Plat neighborhood is funded by state/federal PFAS remediation grants — no new local tax burden. This work coordinates with the ongoing water main extension project bringing municipal water to homes affected by PFAS contamination.

What “Full-Depth Mill & Fill” means: The top layer of asphalt is ground down (milled) and replaced with new pavement. More durable and long-lasting than a surface overlay. Chip seal is a thinner protective surface treatment used on lower-traffic roads.

What to Watch
  • Summer 2026: Road work begins on Hall St, Marsman, Oliver Woods, Jacksmith/Thornbrook, and Bolt Dr. Expect lane restrictions and flaggers.
  • Burger/Goodwood Plat: PFAS-linked road restoration is tied to the water main extension project — also grant-funded. Thornapple River Dr work was flagged as a 2026 notification item at the March meeting.
  • PASER ratings: Updated each December. The 2025 map shows most roads in the Fair–Good range. Red (Poor) roads on the east side and some residential plats are candidates for future programs.
  • KCRC cost-share: This 50/50 model continues annually. Projects are chosen by condition rating, traffic volume, and coordination with other infrastructure work (water, sewer).
