Law Enforcement in Cascade Township
Cascade Charter Township does not have its own police department. Law enforcement services are provided by the Kent County Sheriff's Office under a contract arrangement. The township pays for a dedicated number of deputy hours, and the Sheriff's Office dispatches deputies for calls for service, traffic enforcement, and community policing.
As township population and commercial activity grow, the adequacy of contracted sheriff coverage — and its cost — becomes an increasingly prominent budget question. Some townships in Kent County contract for more intensive coverage; a small number have explored forming their own departments.
Contract and Coverage Details
- Current contract: Cascade Township contracts with the Kent County Sheriff for dedicated patrol deputies. The contract is negotiated periodically and is a significant line item in the township budget.
- Response times: Because deputies also cover other unincorporated county areas, response times to non-priority calls can be longer than in municipalities with dedicated police. Priority calls (in-progress emergencies) are handled quickly through mutual aid.
- Population growth: Cascade has grown steadily for decades. More residents and more commercial activity typically translate to more calls for service — and pressure to increase the deputy contract.
- Sheriff budget pressures: The Kent County Sheriff has faced staffing challenges common to law enforcement agencies nationally. Deputy recruitment and retention affect availability for contract municipalities.

The Two Sides
- Growing population warrants more dedicated patrol hours to maintain response quality
- A larger contract (or eventual township department) gives more local control over policing priorities
- Commercial corridors and new residential areas need regular traffic and community policing presence
- Cascade is a low-crime township; current coverage may be adequate for actual call volume
- Forming a township police department costs significantly more than contract services
- Shared county resources (specialty units, SWAT, detectives) benefit the township without duplication
What to Watch
- Annual budget cycle: Cascade Township's budget process (fall of each year) is where contract coverage levels are set. Residents can comment during budget hearings.
- Sheriff contract renewal: Multi-year contracts come up for renewal. Watch township board meeting minutes for discussions of service level changes or cost increases.
- Kent County millage: Countywide services including the Sheriff are funded partly through county millages. Any county-wide levy changes affect what the Sheriff can offer to townships.
