Should Protesting in Front of Abortion Clinics Be Prohibited?
Abortion is an incredibly contentious topic globally, with large divides between pro-life and pro- choice groups. Both these groups hold protests on a regular basis in order to spread information about both sides of the abortion debate.
One of the places that many pro-life groups choose to demonstrate is outside of abortion clinics. Those who take part in these protests believe that they can make a significant difference in preventing women having abortions by providing them with other options, such as financial support, housing and adoption services, while also raising awareness. The methods that are occasionally used however have come under fire for being aggressive and intimidating, and for preying on women at a time when they are extremely vulnerable.
In many places, such as Australia, and in the area of Ealing in London, buffer zones around abortion clinics, where protest is prohibited have been enacted. Supporters of these measure say that they provide a safer experience for women, while others argue that they are unfairly limiting of free speech.
Should protest be permitted at any time or place, or should there be some restrictions? Should these buffer zones be used in more places?
